If you have a box full of old 8mm or Super 8 film, you might be wondering how much film you have.

When your film was developed many years ago you would get it back on a 3 inch plastic reel. You had a ability to splice (connect) multiple 3 inch reels together and add on to a larger reel. So you many have a box full of 3 inch reels but also larger reels.

8mm and Super 8 film reels by diameter:
Reel Diameter Film Length Time of Video
3" reel 50 feet 3-4 minutes
4" reel 100 feet 6-8 minutes
5" reel 200 feet 12-16 minutes
6" reel 300 feet 19-25 minutes
7" reel 400 feet 30-45 minutes
Some larger than 3 inch reels have notches in them so if your reels are not full you can see how much film you have.
